Internet Communication Tools
E-Mail- Short for electronic mail and is used
to send electronic correspondence via the Internet. Internet's most
popular feature is its e-mail system. Three ways e-mail
is used the most:
To send mail cheaply and conveniently around the world
To join an e-mail discussion list
To request that information be sent to e-mail address.
Telnet
Used to link one computer interactively to another computer
on the Internet. Telnet is a Protocol that
lets us use the power of the internet to connect to databases, library
catalogs and other information

directly to another computer on the internet and run
programs on that computer provided access permission is available.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol is used to communicate with
another computer on the Internet and "download"
or copy files.
Internet Information Tools
Archie
A service developed and maintained by McGill University in Montreal,
Canada that electronically indexes anonymous FTP sites, listing the files
that are available at each site. Archie lists several million files at
over a thousand FTP sites,and provides a surprisingly quick way to discover
where to go and grab a file of interest to you. Archie is
available at other designated sites around the globe through Telnet,e-mail,
Gopher, or an Archie client program.
Gopher
A navigation service used to helps browse around the Internet.It is a
hierarchical menu system that helps find Telnet and FTP sites known as
"gopher holes." Gopher was originally developed at the University of Minnesota.
Veronica
Very Easy Rodent-Oriented Net-wide Index to Computerized Archives, a
frequently updated index service that locates and indexes GopherSpace by
keyword search. A Veronica search typically searches the menus of hundreds of
Gopher servers. Available from most Gophermenus.
WAIS
Pronounced "WAYS" is a client-server system developed to locate documents
containing additional information you want. It searches multiple Internet
sites at once, retrieving resources by searching database indexes. Unlike
Gopher, that simply provides a menu that lets you "travel" around the world, WAIS provides a list of databases,lets you select the one you want to search,
and performs the keyword search for you. If it locates what you want,it can
send the information to your e-mail address.
WWW World Wide Web (also W3) is a hypertext service that allows you to "travel through" linked documents, following any chosen route around the world electronically. Rather than searching for a key word, as you would do with
WAIS you follow a "trail" of linked words with WWW.
Mosaic
A multimedia graphical user interface to WWW integrating
text, graphics, and sound. It is also a hyperlink
based. Internet information browser and WWW client that
provides transparent access to a number of
resources, including anonymous FTP,WAIS, and WWW.
Mosaic can recognize and manipulate a large range
of data types and services,including multimedia based
resources such as sound and animation. Mosaic was
developed by the National Center for Supercomputing
Applications (NCSA) located at the University of Illinois.
WHOIS
A service that provides information on registered users and network names,
including their postal address.The main WHOIS database runs at the
Network Inform.
